BARLOG Plastics GmbH wins KEM Sustainability Award 2025
Overath, 19 November 2025 – BARLOG Plastics GmbH has been honoured with the KEM Sustainability Award 2025. The award was presented for the ECO Calculator, a free online tool for calculating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of plastic injection-moulded parts as early as the initial stages of product development.
The ECO Calculator makes it possible to identify the key factors influencing the Product Carbon Footprint and to compare alternative materials and geometries. The tool thus helps companies to evaluate material and design decisions on the basis of transparent key performance indicators.
The KEM Sustainability Award is presented annually to companies that develop practical solutions in the fields of the environment, corporate responsibility and social engagement. This year, the jury recognised the ECO Calculator’s technology, which enables the early assessment of factors influencing the product carbon footprint in the plastics industry.
ECO Calculator: Assessment of material and product concepts as early as the initial development phases
“We are delighted to receive this award for the ECO Calculator,” explains Peter Barlog, Managing Director of BARLOG Plastics GmbH. “It confirms our approach of supporting companies with practical tools for assessing material and product concepts.”
“The tool is not only a calculation aid for development engineers, but also helps to incorporate product carbon footprint-related metrics into development and material decisions.”
Scope 3 emissions arise along the value chain as a result of the processing and use of products. In complex supply chains, they are often particularly challenging to capture and assess.
The ECO Calculator helps BARLOG Plastics to incorporate product carbon footprint-related metrics into the evaluation of material and product concepts as early as the initial development phases.
The ECO Calculator was specifically developed to assess and compare different material and component variants in terms of their product carbon footprint as early as the initial development phase, when sufficient data for a carbon footprint analysis or a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is not yet available. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that initial results can be obtained quickly and easily.
Using the key performance indicators provided, companies can evaluate and compare different material and product concepts on a sound basis during the development phase, without losing sight of technical requirements and functionality.
The ECO Calculator is therefore a practical tool for evaluating material and product concepts based on key performance indicators such as the product carbon footprint, material usage and costs.
