Residue on ignition
To determine the ash residue according to DIN EN ISO 3451, a sample of the material to be tested is heated in a crucible above the decomposition temperature. This causes the plastic and other organic components of the material to decompose. The inorganic components remain behind. The weight of the sample and the annealing residue can be used to determine the weight-related proportion of the residue. A statement as to which additive is involved is not possible with this test alone. The annealing residue can then be examined under the microscope. Depending on the residue, it may be possible to analyze it in more detail using an IR spectrum.
The determination of the annealing residue is a useful tool in quality control and in the material analysis of reinforced materials.
